Record points haul sees Team BRM's lead extend..
(27/4/2009 at 10:41:34 AM) TEAM BRM Driver Joey Foster has continued his impressive start to the 2009 Formula 3 Australian Drivers’ Championship and has extended the championship lead he built at the first round.

Foster scored two pole positions and a race-two win at Goulburn’s Wakefield Park Raceway at the weekend – and could have had another perfect race score had it not been for an unfortunate race-one jumped start.

Foster’s #5 Team BRM Dallara rolled slightly before the red lights went out and – after running wide at turn one – was forced to serve a drive though penalty as penance.

In recovery Foster stormed though the field and recovered to third place, setting the fastest lap in the process.
In race two the Cornish driver smashed the field, winning by nearly eight seconds despite a safety-car ten laps from home. Foster’s best lap was nearly eight-tenths up on the next best in the 20-lap race, enforcing his dominance.

The Sunday results came after Foster once again showed his mastery of Qualifying; once again timing his run to pole for race one perfectly to bump Mat Sofi from the top spot once the session had actually finished. The effort was much the same as a similar effort in round one’s Clipsal 500.

The results – and another handy 36 championship points – see Foster take his total to 80, giving a lead of 26 of Mat Sofi and 35 over Tim Macrow after two rounds.

Foster has now scored more points in the first two rounds of the championship since any driver in over eight years of the Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship: The next best, Ben Clucas, scored 77 in the first two rounds of his 2006 championship winning season with Team BRM.

At the Clipsal 500 Foster was the first driver in five years to score a ‘perfect’ 44 points in a single round of the championship, sweeping all pole positions, fastest race laps and wins.

The next round of the Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship will be held at the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit between May 15 – 17. Team BRM won three of the four races there held in 2008.

Team BRM will next be in action in this weekends’ second round of the Ford Genuine Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship at Winton, in Victoria. With Joey Foster on hand as a driving coach, the team will again run three Mygale SJ09 chassis for Richie Stanaway, Ben Small and Jordan Skinner.

Joey Foster - #5 Team BRM Dallara F307 Mercedes

“It was a shame about the start of race one, we had a lot of speed and could have got another win. Once I had taken the drive though It was a case of pushing as hard as I could to get back to the podium and get as many points as possible.

“Race two was a fantastic comeback from that and it was great to get the win. The track was very slippery but I pressed on and we got a great result. The aim from this weekend was to continue to score more championship points and that’s what we have done. I’m really looking forward to getting to Phillip Island now for the next round – I’ve heard great things about it and look forward to racing there.”

Mark Rundle – Team Manager

“Joey keeps impressing us with his speed and overall performances,” Mark Rundle said.

“Once again he was nearly faultless and was unlucky not to come away with another perfect score. The car wasn’t perfect but neither were the conditions so I am happy with the way the team performed to give Joey the kind of car that allowed him to be the fastest guy on the circuit by over a second a lap for most of the second race.

“To say we are looking forward to Phillip Island is an understatement. We will return to two cars and after our successes there last year, look forward to more success at such a great circuit.”
