(3/3/2009 at 8:37:07 AM) Rhys Newman has rewritten Australian Motorsport history books by becoming the youngest person in the country to greet the starter under the new rules announced by the Confederation of Australian Motorsport (CAMS) earlier this year.
Newman, who is 15 years of age, competed in Round 1 of the South Australian Motor racing championships at Mallala Motorsport Park on the weekend. The Adelaide student was driving another piece of Australian Motorsport history, Team BRM supremo Bronte Rundle’s very own NG Elfin Formula Vee number 03, built in 1976.
Newman, a multiple Karting Champion who is also a recipient of the CAMS “Future Star Award” and “Junior Development Driver” squad was very pleased with the day. “I would like to thank all those at CAMS who were part of this initiative, especially Bob Piper, Tim Schenken and Michael Masi, without their efforts I would not have been able to complete today” said Newman. “As always Team BRM equipment was faultless and I was able to put in a solid performance”
“One of the great things about this class is its stability” said Rundle “there’s no reason why a 30 year old car still can’t win, and they do, it’s a great starting point for those wishing to compete in open wheel circuit racing”.
Newman, who qualified 4th put in a sterling effort in race 1 with a very solid 4th place and backed it up with a 5th in the final.
“As I have said many times, I am always willing to foster and help young talent where I can, and young Rhys has not only proven himself to me behind the wheel of his kart, but also the way he conducts himself generally and at the race meetings he has attended with us as part of our team. He has used his 8 years of karting experience and underlined his maturity here today with a great début” concluded Rundle.
